Polarizability of dielectric ellipsoid

This applet calculates the normalized (divided by volume and permittivity of free space) polarizability of the dielectric ellipsoid having the relative permittivity e and the semi-axes a, b, and c. Enter the permittivity and the semi-axis lengths and press Start. The polarizability is anisotropic and given by three eigenvalues. The last column shows the depolarization factors of the ellipsoid (the sum of the three depolarization factors equals unity). The digits shown are correct.

The normalized polarizability in the direction of the axis i is given by (e-1)/(1+Ni(e-1)), where Ni is the depolarization factor in this direction.
